The different types of Tunisian carpets
The art of Tunisian handmade rugs is very old: traces of carpets dating back to the Carthaginian period in Tunis have been found, but this craft probably dates back to the Neolithic period. Tunisia has a wide variety of handmade rugs: city rugs such as Margoum rugs, Kairouan rugs and Alloucha rugs, and rural rugs such as kilims and Berber rugs. Chwaya offers three types of Tunisian rugs online: the Margoum, the kilim and the high wool Berber rug. All these rugs are traditionally woven from natural materials, especially wool.
The Margoum Tunisian rug
The margoum is a rather stiff rug from Tunisia, woven short in pure wool and cotton, most often in red, blue or beige tones, with embroidered motifs. This rug, typically Tunisian, is made in the cities of Oudhref, El Jem and Kairouan. The margoum has the particularity that its design is inspired by oriental rugs while being composed of a multitude of Berber patterns forming lozenges. It is thus a pure Tunisian product at the crossroads of cultures. The margoum is also a rather classic rug which meets a certain standard of manufacture (dominant colour, pattern of rhombuses surrounded by borders...) while being the fruit of the imagination of the craftswoman who handles the Berber motifs to perfection. The large margoums are ideally used as living room rugs, but there are also margoums of all sizes (bedroom rugs, hallway rugs, etc.), which fit in perfectly with modern decor. The Kilim Tunisian rug
The kilim, pronounced klim in Tunisia, is a short woolen floor rug, quite light, woven mainly in the towns and villages of central and southern Tunisia (Gafsa, Sidi Bou Zid, Toujane, Djerba...). The weaving is most often rectilinear, composed of bands and very tight, which allows the craftswoman to play with colours and patterns. The geometrical patterns are mainly of Berber origin. One thus finds the famous fish, checkerboards, rhombuses, gazelles, weaving combs... Each kilim is a unique piece resulting from the imagination of the craftswoman who makes it. The Tunisian kilim brings a touch of originality and authenticity to your decoration.
